At 1.52 am on a quiet Friday morning, a passerby saw something disturbing at Miyapur X Road in Hyderabad — two men on a scooter abducting a mentally challenged woman who had been sleeping by the roadside. Without hesitation, the person dialled 100 and informed the police. What followed was a quick response that showed how a single act of civic responsibility can make a difference.
A call that led to a rescue
Despite having limited details, the Miyapur patrol team acted immediately. They rushed to the location but had no leads. The officers raised a red alert, deploying multiple teams across the city to track the kidnappers.

“Immediate response to the SOS and further investigation based on leads generated helped in detecting the case,” The Times of India quoted Ch Y Srinivas, ACP Miyapur division, Cyberabad, as saying.
Using CCTV footage and other clues, the police managed to find the woman in a semi-conscious state at IDA Bollaram, about 7 km from where she had been abducted. She was taken to a hospital, where a medical examination confirmed she had been raped.
Quick action leads to arrest of culprits
With the victim safe, the next step was to catch the culprits. Multiple police teams worked on the case. Based on technical leads, the police arrested I Bala Kumar (25) and G Mahesh (24) from Chandanagar on Monday. Further checks revealed both had criminal records — Bala Kumar had been involved in eight previous crimes, including robbery, while Mahesh had a history of violent offences, including a past murder charge.
The importance of speaking up
Being a responsible citizen isn’t just about obeying laws, it’s about looking out for one another. Whether it’s making way for an ambulance or reporting a crime, even the smallest actions can save lives and this case is just a reminder of that.

The person who called the police had no detailed information but still chose to act. Their decision ensured that a woman in danger was rescued and that the criminals were caught.
How you can make a difference in such situations
Sometimes, all it takes is one small step to change someone’s life. If you ever witness someone in trouble, here’s how you can step up safely and responsibly:
- Make the call: Dial 100 right away. Share whatever details you can—location, what you saw, and any descriptions. Every bit of information helps.
- Stay safe, stay smart: Don’t try to confront anyone. Your safety comes first. Focus on getting help.
- Record if you can: If it’s safe, photos or videos can help the police, but only if it doesn’t put you or the person at risk.
- Rally support: In busy areas, ask others around you for help. There’s strength in numbers.
- Follow-up: If you can, stay connected with the police. Your follow-up could help ensure justice is served.
Remember: You don’t need all the answers to make a difference. Sometimes, the decision to speak up is enough to save a life.
